Dashas are planetary ruled periods in Astrology. They are very important in making predictions and understanding the lessons that we run into in life. It is also great at seeing possible current career pursuits. Vimshottari is the most used Dasha system and tends to give extremely accurate results.

The timing of the Dashas is decided by the planetary ruler of your Moon’s Nakshatra. For example, if your Moon is in Rohini, then you will start at birth with a Moon Mahadasha. This is because Rohini is a Nakshatra ruled by the Moon. Likewise, if your Moon is in Krittika, you will start under a Sun Mahadasha.

Mahadasha means Major Dasha. It is the main planetary period that we undergo. However, we can have subsections that come with it. Typically and within my experience, Mahadasha and the sub-period of Antardasha give the best results. Adding in further subsections can become confusing and doesn’t have as strong an influence. The strongest influence will always come from the Mahadasha.

To find the Dasha period, it can be calculated if the natal Moon Nakshatra is known. Also, most of the Vedic Astrology software used will already do all of the calculations.

Interpretation of the Dasha period can be complex and requires several steps. You can look at the D1 Rashi to see how the Dasha is connected to the general foundation of your life. It’s important to look for the Dasha planet in the chart.

These questions can be helpful. What House is it in? What House (s) does it rule? What sign is it in? Does it receive any aspects? Does it cast any aspects? Is it next to another planet? Seeing this from both the Moon and the Ascendant is best.

The Ascendant will show which area of your life the Dasha will affect. The Moon will show your personal experience and how you feel about the Dasha. So, both of these will be valid. This can be especially helpful if you are aware of your time of birth.

Anytime you look at the D1, you also want to look at the D9 Navamsa for a deeper understanding. You can go from there by looking at other Varga charts as well.

From there, you should know what the general theme of each Dasha is. Then you can apply it to the configurations of your chart.

Here are some general themes for the Dashas. They are not all of the possibilities. This can also vary depending on the age that you experience the Dasha. Along with it changing based on your chart. The chart will point towards whether the Dasha will be more malefic or benevolent by experience. Sometimes it can be a mix of both. Especially when it comes to the malefic planets of Mars, Saturn, Ketu, and Rahu. How you behave and the remedial measures you take can also affect how the Dasha will be experienced.
